چکیده

Responding to natural or man-made disasters in a timely and effective manner can reduce deaths and injuries, contain or prevent secondary disasters, and reduce the resulting economic losses and social disruption. Appropriate IT solutions can improve this response. However, exhaustive and realistic validation of these IT solutions is difficult; proofs are not available, simulations lack realism, and drills are expensive and cannot be reproduced. This paper presents DrillSim: a simulation environment that plays out the activities of a crisis response (e.g., evacuation). It has capabilities to integrate real-life drills into a simulated response activity using an instrumented environment with sensing and communication capabilities. IT solutions can be plugged in the simulation system to study their effectiveness in disaster management and response. This way, by using a simulation coupled with an on-going drill, IT solutions can be tested in a less expensive but realistic scenario.

RAISE: Reflective Middleware Architecture for Integrated Simulation Environments

RAISE is a research project aimed at building a framework and platform that supports the integration of multiple existing models, simulations, and data. The grand challenge is to facilitate the process of pulling the independently created models together. In our approach, RAISE, we explore a reflective middleware to address challenges of integrated simulation environments in which interoperabil...

A Decentralised Multi-Agent System for Emergency Resource Allocation in Metropolitan Regions: (Demonstration)

Nowadays, emergency departments in many countries still rely on human operators to allocate rescue resources to emergency events. However, with the fast growth of population in metropolitan regions, the frequency of occurrence of emergency events has risen significantly, which imposes tremendous pressure over emergency event operators. Agent and multi-agent systems (MASs) provide potential solu...

TENDENKO: agent-based evacuation drill and emergency planning system

Evacuation drills are conducted periodically with the intent of practicing smooth evacuations from buildings, and for practicing rescue operations at emergency sites. An agentbased evacuation simulation with information diffusion provides a platform for simulating human evacuation behavior during emergencies that can be affected by various social and human factors. TENDENKO aims to conduct evac...

Interoperability of Multiple Autonomous Simulators in Integrated Simulation Environments

In this paper, we propose a methodology for integrating multiple autonomous pre-existing simulation models into an integrated simulation environment. One of the limitations of the simulators is that they are developed by domain experts who have an in-depth understanding of the phenomena being modelled and typically designed to be executed and evaluated independently. Therefore the grand challen...
